The Lake

There are several lakes in our area. Have we ever done anything recreational with these lakes in the two years we've lived here? Nope. I've always thought that lakes were just nasty...dirty and fish/leech invested (yes, there is a back story here...when I was like, 12 yrs old, a big ol' leech latched on to my toe and my mom had to pick its body apart to get it off! Blood everywhere...traumatized for life!) Gross. Boating would be fun...but swimming? No way. We've got plenty of nice pools for that! But when a friend invited us to go with them to the lake, I agreed. Mostly because I was just plain curious. And it wasn't bad at all (for me) and the kids had a blast! Treyson loved playing in the sand. Carson and Nixan loved it all...sand, water, and friends. The kids demanded to know why we'd never gone to the lake before. I agreed we'd go back again next summer. But that was before I heard a sad news story the following week. A little 7 yr old boy died from swimming in river water...an amoeba swam up his nose...wreaked havoc on his little body and killed him within hours. So...yeah...we're probably NOT going to the lake again. At least not until my kids learn how to plug their noses and not drink the water (TJ had a particularly hard time with this!).
